“The Three Hermits” an Opera by Stephen Paulus
An opera by Stephen Paulus featuring The Motet Choir and House of Hope Orchestra
This performance was by request of the American Guild of Organists North Central Region Conference.

This opera composed by Stephen Paulus features a libretto by Michael Dennis Browne and is based on a folktale by Leo Tolstoy. The Three Hermits gave birth to one of the most well-known choral works of the late 20th century, “Pilgrims’ Hymn,” which has been performed thousands of times around the world, including at the funerals of Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford. Conducted by Matthew Culloton, this oratorio- style performance features many of the instrumentalists who premiered the work 20 years ago as well as guest singers who have been part the House of Hope music program over the years. Andrew Kane sings the role of the Bishop, Robin Helgen performs as Mother, and the Hermits are sung by David Lower, Mark Dietrich, and Nicholas Chalmers. Other featured artists include Beth Althof, Melissa Holm-Johansen, David Mennicke, and Timothy Bruett.
