What Is Stephen Ministry?

We all experience challenging seasons in life—times when grief, illness, divorce, caregiving responsibilities, loneliness, or other difficult circumstances leave us feeling overwhelmed. During those seasons, having someone to walk beside us can make all the difference.

House of Hope’s Stephen Ministry provides confidential, one-to-one care through trained lay caregivers. Stephen Ministers offer compassionate listening, encouragement, and prayer. Rather than trying to solve problems or offer easy answers, they provide a supportive, dependable presence and a safe space to share openly without judgment.

Stephen Ministers are tangible reminders of God’s love and grace—helping people discover strength, healing, and peace, one conversation at a time.

A Stephen Minister Is…

Compassionate

A caring presence during change, uncertainty, loss, and other difficult seasons.

Confidential

Conversations are private, creating a safe and trusting relationship.

Skilled

Stephen Ministers are congregation members selected for their gifts of compassion, listening, and care. Each completes 50 hours of specialized training.

Through regular visits and conversations, Stephen Ministers offer encouragement, pray faithfully, listen without judgment, and provide care for as long as support is needed.

Who Can Receive Care?

A Stephen Minister may be able to support you or someone you know through:

  • Grief or loss
  • Illness or hospitalization
  • Divorce or relationship change
  • Caregiving responsibilities
  • Unemployment or major life transition
  • Loneliness, uncertainty, or another difficult season

Stephen Ministry is not professional counseling, crisis intervention, or medical care. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental-health emergency, call 911 or 988.

House of Hope’s Ministry of Care

Stephen Ministry at House of Hope

Since 2016, House of Hope’s Stephen Ministry has trained more than 20 Stephen Ministers who have cared for more than 50 people—often meeting weekly over many months. Through compassionate listening, prayer, and encouragement, they bring the hope and love of God to people who need it most.

Care That Multiplies Ministry

Pastors are deeply involved in congregational care, especially during times of crisis, transition, grief, or uncertainty. Stephen Ministry extends that care by equipping trained laypeople to offer compassionate, one-to-one support. Together, pastors and Stephen Ministers create a stronger network of care where more people can experience support and hope.
