Built in 1923, the carillon was a gift from Emily Gilman Noyes in memory of her husband, Charles, who was a longtime trustee and a member of the 1914 building committee for the House of Hope.

The carillon welcomes people to the House of Hope for a minimum of 100 services or events throughout a calendar year. The carillon is heard each Sunday morning before or after the worship service; and for weddings, memorial services, holiday concerts and other special events. The Summer July Carillon Recital Series began in 1994, coordinated by David Johnson, now House of Hope’s Carillonneur Emeritus following his retirement in 2023. This series is a familiar event for this faith community and its neighborhood. In 2008, the series expanded to include Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis after the installation of a 47 bell instrument in its new bell tower.
The series opens each year with the annual July 4 Independence Day concert and continues each weekend with a different player. The selected recitalists are national or international players who offer a recital of varied musical styles for this outdoor event. Click here for information regarding the 2026 series.
Other special recitals throughout the year include the Christmas Eve recitals (which begin 40 minutes before the worship services) and the Christmas Day concert at 3 p.m. The bells remain silent for Holy Week but the carillon is heard throughout the morning of Easter Day. In addition, there are noon recitals for Martin Luther King Day (third Monday of January), Ukrainian Remembrance Day on February 24, the Juneteenth Concert on June 19, and Thanksgiving afternoon.
