SUMMARY:Formations Series: The God Revolution
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of the Second World War and the Holocaust\, in a period where ordinary people were beset with doubts and the problem of God’s involvement with evil and suffering had become acute\, many theologians grappled with new ways to think and talk about God\, which generally resulted in the rejection of traditional understandings of God’s power and action. \nIn a four-week class on Wednesday nights\, Senior Pastor Scott Jones will launch the first in a series of Formations for 2026\, taught by our clergy. \nJoin us for a potluck meal at 5:30 p.m.\, then hear about and discuss the rich and wonderful explorations of God in contemporary theology. Future classes will discuss methods of Biblical interpretation\, practical spiritual skills\, and the way of discipleship. \nThis session: What insights on God were gained when the church began to listen to a broader array of voices and perspectives? On Wednesday\, January 28\, our Formations class\, The God Revolution\, will explore various liberation theologies that emerged in the late 20th century\, addressing poverty\, racism\, sexism\, homophobia\, and more.

DESCRIPTION:MUSIC SUNDAY: Dietrich Buxtehude: Eins bitte ich\, vom Herrn \nDietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was born in Denmark\, though he is considered both Danish and German by scholars. His musical reputation is firmly rooted in compositions for organ\, but as music director at St. Mary’s in Lübeck\, he composed (likely) hundreds of cantatas\, one of which the Motet Choir is preparing at present. Much of his music was undiscovered until the 20th Century\, and as one could guess\, much of it was lost as well. \nBuxtehude famously had such influence over both J.S. Bach and Handel that the former walked over 200 miles to meet him while the latter paid a visit in Lübeck when he was just 18 years old. In a tale that has likely grown in detail for a few hundred years (but is cited in Britannica!)\, both Bach and Handel were hoping to succeed Buxtehude at St. Mary’s\, but neither found Buxtehude’s daughter attractive – and a marriage to her was unfortunately part of the deal. It worked out fine for both gentlemen as they somehow mustered on and built modest musical careers elsewhere! \nEins bitte ich\, vom Herrn is a charming cantata for chorus\, soloists\, and small orchestra – quintessential Baroque “good mood music!” The text of the opening chorus paraphrases: One thing I pray from the Lord\, that I may stay in the house of the Lord the whole of my life\, and witness the Lord’s beautiful divine services and visit his temple. The other texts hint at Lenten themes\, though the music remains joyous and humble\, so it is a lovely musical bridge as we change church seasons. \n–Matthew Culloton\, Choirmaster

Food is a basic need that must be met daily. However\, we often hear from our guests that the cost of food is one of the first items in their family’s monthly budget to be cut as it is one of the only items within their control. Knowing that food is medicine and proper nutrition increases our overall physical health and mental well-being\, it is critical that members of our community are able to reliably access healthy\, affordable food.
