Women's Retreat 2018

The House of Hope Women’s Retreat

The Waters of Baptism

Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 8

Saint John’s Abbey Guesthouse, Collegeville

This women’s retreat is designed to be a time for reflection and renewal centered around the sacrament of baptism and its meaning for our lives. We will explore the place of baptism in our faith and practice, trusting that new understandings will deepen our spiritual sense of God’s grace in our lives. One of the aims of the retreat is to share our insights, talk and laugh together, and find the blessings of friends and sisters in Christ, better comprehending and reaffirming our own baptism.

What is baptism? Many questions whirl around about it. For instance, some Christians think one has to make a conscious personal choice to be baptized, so why do we baptize infants who cannot? Why do parents have to “renounce sin” in the questions to parents before their child is baptized? Why don’t we immerse people, like in a river or a lake? At funerals, what does it mean when a pastor says, “When we were baptized in Christ Jesus, we were baptized into his death?” And, why is baptism so fundamental to our Christian faith?

All women are invited for this weekend retreat at Saint John’s Abbey Guesthouse located in central Minnesota on 2,600 acres of woodlands and lakes. Most guest rooms have a scenic view of Lake Sagatagan. There will be time to learn together, reflect in silence, explore the walking paths, and join the monastic community in worship and prayer. The Saint John’s Bible is on display in the Alcuin Library, and we’ll arrange a tour as a special treat for those able to come early Friday afternoon.
