House of Hope's annual Summer Carillon Recital Series will be presented on July Sundays at 4:00 p.m. Sunday July 4 - Joseph Daniel, Assistant Carillonneur, University of Michigan, assisted by David Johnson, Carillonneur, House of Hope. The traditional Independence Day program will conclude with a duet performance of John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever." Sunday, July 11 - Lyle Anderson, Carillonneur, University of Wisconsin, Madison. Sunday, July 18 - Julianne Vanden Wyngaard, Carillonneur, Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids and Allendale, Michigan. Sunday, July 25 - Ellen Espenschied Dickinson, Carillonneur, Yale University and Director of Music, Norfield Congregational Church, Weston, Connecticut, Grand Rapids and Allendale, Michigan. Noyes Memorial Carillon The House of Hope was one of the first churches in North America to have a carillon when the bells were installed in the tower in 1923. House of Hope's carillon is a four-octave, fully chromatic instrument with 49 bells ranging in weight from 11 pounds to 5,280 pounds. It operates entirely by mechanical means; that is, each key is connected directly to a bell by means of wires and transmission bars, and the instrument is thereby under the player's complete expressive control. The best locations from which to listen are the front lawn on Summit Avenue and the north side of Portland Avenue behind the church. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic basket!
