The Movie Club for October, 2006Please join us when we watch the documentary film "Why We Fight" (Sony 2005) on Thursday, October 5 at 7 p.m. in the Skylight Room. This documentary explores the questions, "Is American foreign policy dominated by the idea of military supremacy? Has the military become too important in American life?" The arguments presented in this film would seem to give an affirmative answer to each of these questions. However, you will also hear the rationale for maintaining the world’s most powerful military. Upon departing his presidency, Dwight Eisenhower issued a stern, cogent warning about the burgeoning "military industrial complex," foretelling with ominous clarity the state of the world in 2004 with its incestuous entanglement of political, corporate, and Defense Department interests.
Because of the controversial nature of this documentary, we will not discuss the film at its conclusion, but will ask viewers to reflect on the message and the meaning of what is presented. For more information call Dennis Anderson at 651-730-4003 or e-mail him at dennis-st.paul@usfamily.net.
